Air Force 1 (or AF1) doesn't originally flaunt the iconic moniker - the name is a reference to Air Force One, the aircraft carrying the President of the United States. The sneaker, designed by Bruce Kilgore, is originally a favourite of young people in urban neighborhoods, especially in Harlem, New York; hence the name "Uptowns". The Air Force 1 debuted in 1982 and was discontinued in 1984. It was re-released in 1986 with the modern Nike logo in italics and a Swoosh on the back of the shoe.
