Cristóbal Balenciaga opened his first boutique in San Sebastián, Spain, in 1917. Known as an impeccable couturier, Dior calls him "the master of us all". The stylist moved to Paris due to the Spanish Civil War, there, his balloon skirts and strange, feminine but "modernist" silhouettes became the trademarks of the house. Balenciaga closed in 1972 and reopened under new ownership in 1986. The brand is now owned by the French holding company Kering.
