Long before the visible Air unit arrived on the scene, Nike already cushioned the soles of the shoes with gas. Frank Rudy has the idea of inserting air into a shoe, and his inspiration comes directly from his work as an aeronautical engineer he did for NASA. The father of the Air Max, Tinker Hatfield, finds inspiration for the silhouette thanks to the inaugural project of the Center Pompidou. Hatfield, a graduate architect, is enraptured by the building's paradoxical approach, with the structure enveloping the building's exterior. Hence the idea of exposing the internal mechanisms of the shoe: the visible Air window that will revolutionize the world of footwear since 1987.
